All Risks
All risks is the type of cover which costs more but is worth it. This type of contents insurance will generally cover new for old, accidental damage and will have extensive geographical coverage for your possessions. The exclusions are much less than that of a normal policy which usually make them good value for money.
Exclusions
Do you know what is not covered on your contents insurance policy? Some of the more common items excluded are as follows:
- Fences
- Sheds
- Money and credit cards
There are also some conditions placed on policy holders which if not in place could invalidate your contents insurance:
- External doors should have approved 5-lever mortice locks
- Ground floor windows should have key operated locks
- The property is not left unoccupied for more than 30 days
- That you are not renting the property out.
If you have any doubts about any of the exclusions or conditions above you should call your contents insurance company now.
Adjusting Your Contents Insurance Policy
Known in the trade as a mid term adjustment, this is when you notify your contents insurance provider that your or your home's circumstances have had a material change and they alter your policy.
This is important as the premium you are paying is based on the information you gave your contents insurance company at the beginning of the policy, if things change they may need to adjust your premium. Also if you have not notified them of something they see as a material change, then you may not be covered.
Defining a material change is difficult. To be on the safe side, call your insurer and find out if something has changed materially, you may find it could save you a lot of money in the long run.
